EXPERIMENT 2

INTRODUCTION

I really enjoyed this specific experiment because it is without a doubt one of the most fun and interesting genres that I could have pursued. The ability to think through what I wanted to say and the message I was trying to convey was super fun and interesting to think about. While I was not able to actually do the podcast because I was in Ann Arbor, I still feel like I learned a lot and I am leaning towards doing this as my primary experiment.

GENRE RESEARCH

I started my research on the wonderful world of podcasting by going where every lost researcher goes to get fast and easy information: Youtube. The very first video that I came across was “how podcasts became so popular.” In this 5 minute video, I learned that the art of podcasting is a relatively new venture that people have taken upon themselves because 1) the stakes are low 2) it can be lucrative and 3) and they are extremely cheap to produce. However, this is not what I wanted to learn in my research; I want to know the IMPACT of podcasts, and so my research continues. This led to me to a podcast by the fighter and the kid podcast -- a podcast with a variety of comedians talking about in which they talk about the impact of podcasts, and the take away I got was that people do podcasts and appear on a variety of ones because it builds their reputation and allows them to “sell more books.” Again, my question was not answered. This just showed the influence of podcasts. From further research, I learned that people also like them because of the fact that it saves people a lot of time and can multitask. My research really did not get me to the main question I wanted to answer, but I know for me I want to go into this medium because of the unique form of storytelling it does.

SKETCH

The next project I would love to do is a podcast. I would love to talk about a series of stories that I believe were the most impactful on me as a child. It will go through 3 stories as following:

  • My childhood home burning down

  • The school that I went to up until 6th grade

  • And stories about hanging out with the various neighborhood kids

Following the telling of each story, I will go into a reflective space but it will be a bit different. My brothers and I were really affected by how we grew up and I think that they need to be included in the reflection because all of us have something unique to say and contribute to the story we are talking about. This reflective space will therefore be very casual and will be a very candid conversation between me and my brothers on what we experienced.

At the end of it all, it will be a space where I will generally talk about myself and who I have become based on my past experiences and where I hope to go.

SAMPLE

Script:

“The ages between 4-12 were the most impactful years of my life. A time just shy before the iphone became a household staple. A time in which I sent most days out on the street and sitting on the steps of my apartment building with the other neighborhood kids.”

Next part of the script will be most of a flow on consciousness section:

  • Talk about the babysitter I had and their kids who we were closest in the neighborhood

  • Talk about the other white families in the neighborhood and their place there

  • Talk about the “beef” we had with another group of kids

Next part of the section will be the reflection on these kids with my brothers and them providing any information they want to add.

Reflection

It is very difficult to do a proper reflection because I was not able to fully do the act of podcasting with the people that I wanted to, and to do such a thing it would’ve been very tricky with COVID and all. Yet, I think that my research and the rough sketch that I have I was able to learn a lot. I learned that I love to talk and I get excited about the prospect to talk. The ability to share my story and maybe others’ stories through voice is something that is very appealing to me and something that I hope to do in the future.
